The 2016 Gentlemen's Cup

Park City, Utah
September 15 - 18

Lords (8) def. Nobles (2.5)

The 2016 Gentlemen's Cup introduced a whole new group of golfers to the cup with six fresh new faces out of the total thirteen. The "Funky Format" was also added to the mix, using pre-designed scorecards by Nobles captain, Chip Cavanaugh. Each hole had a unite format (scramble, shamble, or alternate shot) and varying tees (blue, white, or red) per hole. Both additions were huge hits among the players.

2016 did start a little rocky however when Connor's father fell just before the golfers arrived, reducing the beds and bedrooms and putting a large number of golfers on air mattresses and couches. Thankfully, the courses were spectacular and the gorgeous fall weather gave the players enough to focus on that they weren't complaining about their sleeping arrangements. Furthermore, Mary and Charlie got a chance to see the G-Cup up close. (They made sure they were not around in 2017!)

The fourth Lords win in a row, 2016 cemented the Lords dominance in G-Cup play even with five new players on the team.

Sep 15, 2016 - Scramble
Park City Municipal Golf Course
(1/2 point per match)
Score at the end of Day 1: Lords 1.5 - Nobles 0

Park City Municipal turned out to be the sleeper favorite of the 2016 trip. An unexpected gem, the opening course played fairly open - a great benefit for the two-man scramble games.

Additionally, a "pink ball" gambling game was added and Tristan Davis was the only golfer with his ball left at the end of the day - taking home the entire pot.

The Lords were strong on day 1, winning all three matches handily. Chip Cavanaugh drew the short straw (keeping a trend alive), facing the brothers Paul and Mark Fung and played well but their two golfers and two shot advantage made the match relatively lopsided.

Sep 16, 2016 - "Funky Format (SH/SC/AS)"
Mountain Dell Golf Course - Mountain Course
(1 point per match)
Score at the end of Day 2: Nobles 2.5 - Lords 2

Mountain Dell Golf Course hosted day two of the cup and in contrast to Park City GC the fairways were incredibly narrow on much of the back nine (not pictured). A strategy change was required - something the trailing Nobles seemed well equipped to do.

If day one was all Lords, day two was all Nobles. Strong play (wining two and halving one) gave them a slight lead after the second day.

Derek found that consistent play certainly helped his game, leading his group from trailing early to winning 4 holes on the back nine and leaving the overly-confident pairing of Fee and Fung feeling a little shell-shocked.

The one bright spot was a late-round surge from Evan Solomon and James Pagenkopf to halve their match. Capped off by an off-the-green chip in by Solomon, the teams could sense day three was going to be one for the books.

Sep 17, 2016 - "Funky Format (SH/SC/AS)"
Wastach Mountain State Park - Mountain Course
(2 points per match)
Score at the end of Day 3: Lords 8 - Nobles 2.5

Picturesque Wasatch Mountain Golf course played host to the final three matches of the 2016 G-Cup and set the stage for an exciting finish.

Playing two against three, Moyer and Pagenkopf were allowed three balls off the tee and they made the most of it. With second drives as pretty as a 1950's movie style deckhand, Andrew Moyer was bombing balls down the fairway making approach shots easy.

Makings things even more difficult for Derek and Tristan, was the introduction of "Hambo Lambo." Downing a more than your average serving of Vodka (warm), Matt required "managerial oversight", diverting his playing partners attention away from the golf at hand.

The brothers Fung teamed up again, this time taking on Eduardo Buelna and Adam Napp. Their shared DNA and right-swing, left-swing combo proved too much for the Nobles in the Utah mountains.

Chip Cavanaugh and Alex Levy made the turn 4 up by playing off of one another well combining strong driving, approach and off the green shots. Fee and Solomon weren't to be denied however, clawing back over the course of the back nine with a combination of brilliance and luck.

In the end, the Lords won the day taking home 6 more points and ensuring ownership of the cup for a fourth straight year.
